Sex After Total Joint Replacement
A Guide for You and Your Partner after Hip or Knee Replacement
It is common for people to have sex less often just before and right after a total joint replacement (hip or knee) due to pain and stiffness. A short time after surgery, your new joint will allow you to return to most of the activities you enjoyed before your surgery, including sex. When you first resume sex, proceed sensibly and with caution—but without fear.
The illustrated booklet Sex After Total Joint Replacement will help you understand your feelings about sex and the precautions you must take during sex after a total hip or knee joint replacement. It shows sexual positions you can use which will protect your new joint and will make sex more comfortable. The booklet should be shared with your partner. Your surgeon can answer any questions you and your partner may have about this booklet. This booklet should not replace the advice of your doctor, surgeon, therapist or nurse.
Over 100,000 copies of this book has been purchased by hospitals and surgeons to give to their patients after total hip and knee replacement. It has been featured in Arthritis Today, RN Magazine, and Arthritis Management magazines and recommended by the Arthritis Foundation. The booklet was featured on Sirius Radio’s Orthopedic Show in October 2010.
This booklet is now available for purchase by the public as an e-book or the same paperback bought by hundreds of health care professionals and hospitals to give to their joint replacement patients and used in Joint Replacement Readiness Classes. This booklet is not available from anyone else!

“After having my hips replaced 5 years ago I find I still cant have intercourse. It has become a real problem and in order to save my relationship I really need to sort out this problem. I just cannot flex my hips enough. I am a young 62 and would love to enjoy sexual intercourse again. Please help. I have started to go to the gym and do excersices. I never had physiotherapy after the operations and I feel I should have. Are there any exercises that I could safely do to stretch my joints? With thanks.”
